Companies of the Saltend Chemicals Park community
px group delivers management and engineering solutions for clients within high hazard and highly regulated environments.
As owner of Saltend Chemicals Park px will play an important role in the provision of utilities, infrastructure and services to allow the companies based at the site to concentrate on their core business goals.
BP European Acetyls
Saltend Chemicals Park is the European centre for BP’s Acetyls business unit and BP own and operate two world-scale acetyls plants here.
These plants are the largest producers of Acetic Acid in Europe.
Acetic acid plays an important part in the manufacture of films, fibres, fabric, washing powder and food packaging. Acetic Anhydride, also produced here on site, is used in making cellulose acetate which is found in textiles and plastics. It is also used in pharmaceuticals.
Air Products PLC serves customers in industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and speciality gases, performance materials, and equipment and services.
Here at Saltend, Air Products supply oxygen and nitrogen to the site infrastructure.
BP Petrochemicals technology
BP is at the forefront of research and technology in the petrochemicals field, and Hull is one of our principal global centres for petrochemicals research and technology. In addition, Hull hosts part of BP’s Centre of Expertise in Applied Chemistry and Physics (AC&P).
The Cativa® process is a world-leading technology and a pioneering approach to making acetic acid. Cativa® is the method used for producing acetic acid by carbonylation of methanol using an iridium catalyst system. This technology was developed by a team in Hull in the 1990s and commercialised in 1995.
Teams in Hull have also developed the SaaBre™ process – a new route for the production of acetic acid by converting synthesis gas directly to acetic acid in a proprietary, integrated three-step process.
Saltend Cogeneration Company Limited
The Saltend Cogeneration Company Limited entered commercial operations at Saltend in November 2000.
It is one of the largest, most efficient natural gas-fired electric power generating facilities in England and is well placed to compete in the UK power market.
As a cogeneration facility, the power station provides electricity and steam for Saltend Chemicals Park and the balance of the plant's output is sold into the deregulated UK power market.
INEOS operates a modern world-scale chemical plant at the Saltend Chemical Park, producing ethyl acetate. This intermediate chemical is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of everyday household products such as the manufacture of perfumes and printing inks; paints and varnishes; and flavour and odour enhancers.
Approximately 40 people are directly employed by INEOS locally at Saltend Chemicals Park, dedicated to the safe and reliable operation of their chemical plant. In addition, they use a number of contractors in supplying key services in support of their operation.
INEOS is a global manufacturer of petrochemicals, specialty chemicals and oil products. It is the world’s third largest chemical company with a production network which spans 64 manufacturing facilities in 14 countries throughout the world.
In 2004 Nippon Gohsei (UK) Limited commissioned the largest single-line Ethylene-Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer (EVOH) plant in the world here at Saltend.
EVOH, under the trade name SOARNOL®, is a packaging material for preserving flavour and freshness. SOARNOL is mainly composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, has no toxic gases when burned, and its combustion heat is only half that of polyethylene, causing little harm to the environment.
Vivergo Fuels was formed in 2007 as a biorefinery for the future. As a joint venture between AB Sugar and DuPont, this new £350m business will help to deliver about 1/3 of the UK’s forecast bioethanol demand for petrol once fully operational.
The company will be one of the largest bioethanol producers in Europe (producing 420 million litres per year) and the largest single source supplier of animal feed in the UK, producing 500,000 tonnes each year.
Yara International ASA is the number one global supplier of mineral fertilizers.
Yara help provide food and biomass which can be used for renewable energy for a growing world population. Their industrial product portfolio includes environmental protection agents that prevent air pollution.
Yara is headquartered in Oslo with operations in more than 50 countries and sales to about 150 countries. Here at Saltend Yara own an ammonia plant. The ammonia produced at Saltend is transported by sea vessel to other Yara production units in the Netherlands and France, where it is used as a key raw material for the production of nitrogen fertilizers and other chemical products.
